Babcock studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he earned a BFA and an MFA, respectively. Further studies were pursued at the Skowhegan School in Maine and Glass at the Toledo Museum of Art. After forty years as the Glass Department Chairman, College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Babcock was awarded the distinguished Professor Emeritus.Babcock today is immersed in the series entitled “Pillared Series,” in which his preferred, traditional materials of metal and stone are utilized as the anchors for the large works. Always featuring a glass component, Babcock provides a visual passageway through the mass of the sculpture and seduces the viewer with light and radiant color. To the contrary of the imposing structures, each sculpture nevertheless projects a precarious nature, which he believes is a metaphor for life.

Babcock is also renowned for his municipal public works projects, predominately featuring metal fabrication. The most important of these works is located at the Hsinchu Culture Center in Taiwan: a towering steel structure with a glass circle interior lit be 180 fiber optically lit glass surface nubs that pulsate rhythmically in the dark.

Herbert Babcock’s works are featured in national and international public and private collections, galleries, and museums. David Anthony Fine Art is pleased to represent Babcock in Taos, New Mexico. Back to top
